About

About Griffin Inn

Griffin Inn has been welcoming travelers and locals since the middle of the 19th century. It was built in Gothic style, as part of a series of estate buildings for the Llanbedr Hall estate. The nearby Gatehouse is in a similar style.
Other listed buildings in the village are the Gatehouse (Grade II), St Peter’s Church (Grade II*) and Plas Isa (Grade II). “St Peter’s Church” gives the village its name – “Llanbedr” means St Peter’s Church in Welsh.

Griffin Inn has been a Grade II listed building since June 1999. Being Grade II listed means that careful thought has had to be given to maintaining the unique look of the building whilst adapting it for modern, 21st century use.

Location

Griffin Inn is ideally situated at the foot of the Clwydian Range, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in rural Denbighshire. To the rear of the Inn, the land rises steeply up to Foel Fenlli and Moel Famau and other peaks including many topped by Iron Age hillforts. The Inn is easily accessible from the world famous Offa’s Dyke National Trail, a long distance footpath that runs from North to South Wales.

To the front of the Inn is the Vale of Clwyd (Dyffryn Clwyd in Welsh), with historic, medieval Ruthin within easy reach (a 2km walk). Friendly, welcoming with lovely independent shops and some great restaurants, Ruthin is a great place to spend a few hours. Explore Nant Clwyd y Dre, the oldest half timbered house in North Wales. Take a tour of Ruthin Gaol: the “Gruelling Experience” is not to be missed.

Or try the award winning Ruthin Craft Centre, have tea and cakes in one of several lovely tea shops, browse Ruthin’s independent shops for clothes or souvenirs and finish the day with a night out at a local pub or restaurant. We are ideally situated for days out to Snowdonia, Conwy Castle, Bodnant Gardens and Chester.
